Tate Modern presents the exhibition dedicated to a world wide historical art movement: the Surrealism.
Surrealism is a quid between dream and knowledge, real and unreal. An exploration to the unconscious mind throughout sometimes bizarre imagery across endless mediums. The core of Surrealism is a focus on illustrating the mind’s deepest thoughts automatically when they surface a process known as “automatism”.
The artistic movement found a real form when the poet Guilliame Apollinaire first coined the term “Surreal” in reference to the idea of an independent reality, existing “beneath” our conscious reality but, above all, when it initially surfaced in 1924 when French poet André Breton published his “Manifesto of Surrealism,” influenced by the theories and writings on the unconscious mind by psychologist Sigmund Freud, the groundbreaking studies of Carl Jung, and the early 20th-century Dada movement.
On show over 150 works among paintings, photos, sculptures, movies, many of which have never been shown in the UK.
The exhibition “Surrealism Beyond Borders to Tate” explores the collective interests shared by artists across regions to highlight their interrelated networks.
“Surrealism Beyond Borders” is organised by Tate Modern and The Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York. It is co-curated by Matthew Gale, Senior Curator at Large at Tate Modern, and Stephanie D’Alessandro, Leonard A. Lauder Curator of Modern Art and Senior Research Coordinator in Modern and Contemporary Art at The Met; with assistance at Tate Modern from Carine Harmand, Assistant Curator, International Art; and at The Met from Lauren Rosati, Assistant Curator, Leonard A. Lauder Research Center for Modern Art, and Sean O’Hanlan, Research Associate in Department of Modern and Contemporary Art.
