The time has come. After its sold in 1994, nine years ago, the work returns to auction in London, Sotheby’s, on 27 June 2023. The portrait of an unknown woman – Dame mit Fächer (Lady with a fan) – represents the last important portrait painted by Klimt. Sotheby’s London. In detail: from a private collection. Gustav Klimt (1862 – 1918). Dame mit Fächer (Lady with a Fan), oil on canvas, 100.2 X 100.2 cm, 39 ½ by 39 ½ in. Executed between 1917-18. Lot number 125. Estimate upon request, with an estimated value of approximately £ 65 million ($ 80 million).
Provenance: Gustav Nebehay Gallery, Vienna – Erwin Böhler, Vienna (purchased in 1920) – Heinrich Böhler, Vienna and St. Moritz (brother of the previous; acquired from the previous) – Mabel Böhler, Lugano (wife of the previous; inherited from the previous in 1940) – Dr Rudolf Leopold, Vienna (acquired from the above around 1963 and at least until 1981) – Serge Sabarsky, New York – Wendell Cherry, New York and Louisville, Kentucky (acquired from the above in 1988) – Sotheby’s, New York, May 11, 1994, lot 44 (delivered from the above assets). Purchased from the above sale by the current owner’s family, $ 11.6 million.
Not only Gustav Klimt among the lots, but also Tamara de Lempicka, Lucian Freud, Edvard Munch, Wassily Kandinsky, Gerhard Richter, Lucio Fontana, Claude Monet, Pablo Picasso, Alighiero Boetti and many others.
